Okay, I lied - something I do a little too much, maybe. It’s not true that I never get scared.
“Liam. Spit it out.”
Generally, that tone never meant anything good. So, as always, I fixed him with the most blinding smile in my repertoire and asked, “Spit what out?”
“Yeah. You should know, by the way, that look hasn’t worked on me for years,” Thom said, with no small amount of smugness. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“Wrong?” I asked, trying not to look as offended as I felt. What did he mean, didn’t work? I was a master at looking innocent and unperturbed. “Nothing in particular.”
“Right,” Thom drawled. “That was the fifth time I’ve tried to get your attention in the past minute. If nothing’s wrong, would you like to tell me when you starting slipping into dissociative comas?”
One day, I keep telling myself, he’ll have actual patients to do this to, and then maybe he’ll ease up a little. Which is unlikely. But I can be optimistic. “I was just thinking, a little…” And I was embarrassed enough that this bothered me in the first place, but I had told him I’d be more truthful. “Just about what you said the other day. About how the king is a useless piece.”
He coughed, probably to stall while he thought of how to answer, but he ended up blurting out, “Well, obviously I didn’t mean you. I didn’t know about this… ridiculous… chess whatever-the-hell-this-is at the time.”
“It’s fine,” I said with a shrug. “I’m not offended or anything.”
And I wasn’t, which was why I’d tried not to tell Thom. I didn’t want him to reassure me; I knew this was something he hadn’t given a second’s thought to in the first place. As far as he was concerned, this place defied every law of science that existed, and I had the little brother get-out-of-jail-free card. It wasn’t even worth thinking about to him.
But, as expected, he kept going. “For that matter, you’re not even the king to begin with. You’re not…” He stared at me for a long moment, snapping his fingers rapidly, and finally finished, “not plastic.”
I couldn’t help it. I laughed. “That doesn’t make sense, you realize.”
“Yeah, well, forgive me for not being at my best,” Thom grumbled, but the annoyance dissipated quickly. “Seriously, Liam, I didn’t mean useless. I just…” He made some unrecognizable gesture again. One day, I’d figure out what he was trying to indicate. “It’s just like Mom said. It’s not really good for. Y’know. Offensive maneuvers.”
“Don’t listen to the uninformed, Liam.” I didn’t see Mary sidle up next to me, but when I looked over, she was standing next to me. She smiled when she met my eyes. “The king is an extremely important piece. Much more so than this expendable knight, here.”
“… hey.” He glared at her over my head. “Who’s expendable, exactly?”
“Important, yes,” I said, deciding that Thom could defend himself, “but the king can’t do much by himself, right?”
“Not so.” She reached down to touch my cheek. She was awfully… close, all of a sudden. “Or I should say perhaps, but only within the strategy of an amateur. A grandmaster’s king, on the other hand…” Cupping my chin now. And very, very close. For some reason I kept forgetting, but she really was pretty. “I can find quite a few uses for you.”
In the next second, Thom’s bulk was firmly between us. “And that,” he announced, “is enough of that.”
“Oh, not this again,” Mary huffed. “We were discussing strategy!”
“Then discuss strategy from over there!” Thom pointed to the edge of the path. “Hands off, understand?”
“Thom,” I protested mildly, “I don’t really mind-”
“Yes, you do.”
“Yes, I do,” I echoed obediently, which seemed to placate him, and we continued to walk. A few uses for me, huh? I was willing to bet not many of them involved getting us all home, did they?
“Liam.” Mary’s voice this time. When I turned, I found her glancing at me around Thom’s shoulder, still smiling. “A king shouldn’t be making a face like that.”
I only smiled at her and nodded, and tried not to say it out loud: that the king existed to be protected, hunted, captured. Whatever face I was making, it was probably pretty accurate.
Happy Birthday! You know, 19 is actually a pretty sweet age-- last one before 20, which I can't help but think of as oh my god old.
I will enjoy the last of my teenaged years! Because then 20 years old is the Abyss between sweet sweet youth, and the year when you can legally start drinking...
Happy birthday :D I think everyone else already said my favorite games.. Uncharted is pretty cool though!
Thank you! So many games, so little money ;_; I'll definitely look up Uncharted though! | |
